Maori Village

One evening in Rotorua, we learned how to do the Haka war dance of the Maori people. This entails much shouting and thigh slapping along with bugged eyes and a stuck-out tongue. This dance pretty much asks for help from your ancestors in battle, along with intimidating the enemy and showing that you desire to eat their flesh. Jordan demonstrates this face with Maori war paint in place of facial tattoos. We also visited a mostly-traditional Maori village for a taste of their culture. Jeff was elected chief of a group of students an had to do a few embarrassing things along with meeting the chief of the tribe and experiencing their intimidating meeting rituals up close.

(Second) A Maori feast is prepared by putting meats and vegetables in an underground pit covered in volcanic rock. We three chiefs removed the rock and linen coverings to reveal an amazing meal below! This included chicken, potatoes, carrots, mussels, Tilapia, stuffing, lamb and much more.
